Etsy gives every listing exactly 13 tag slots and each tag has a hard 20-character limit. Using fewer than 13 tags is leaving search visibility on the table. Using duplicates or generic tags like 'handmade' (which everyone uses) is also leaving it on the table. The goal is 13 distinct, long-tail phrases that match real buyer searches and do not duplicate what is already in your title.

Multi-word tags outperform single-word tags in most categories. 'Coffee mug gift' beats 'mug' because it matches buyer search intent directly. Etsy also reports that longer tags (14-18 characters) drive more impressions on long-tail searches than short ones. The generator defaults to multi-word where the character budget allows.

Refresh tags every 30-60 days during the first 3 months of a listing, then quarterly. Use the Etsy Stats panel to see which tags drove the most views, and replace underperformers. This is free testing and the sellers who do it gain ranking over the sellers who set 13 tags once and never revisit them.
